We have spent the last 3 days traveling from Port Lincoln in SA to Esperance in WA, crossing the Nullabor and seeing the great Australian Bight were both great highlights. We also had the pleasure of traveling with Kathie Warren a seasoned nomad who has recently toured Tasmania and trekked across to Iron Knob in SA to hook up and travel with us for a while from around Streaky Bay to the Great Australian Bight. Thanks Kathie it was great to share part of our journey with you and learn from your experience.
Our journey has been through Easter so most campsites by the coast were crammed full of holiday makers. Kathie introduced us to road side campsites, little know spots set off from the main road where you can spent the night. There are no facilities other than a cleared patch of ground for a campsite and a make shift fire pit. Sometimes there may be a bin on a gravel road pull off with the track to the camps at the rear. in one case the camp was off the road behind a disused gravel quarry.
We have been using a social networking camping service called wikicamps, fantastic resource and has many of these road side camps listed with comments and ratings from fellow travelers and often images uploaded.
Last night we had a restful night after a long drive in a very secluded site way off the road in amongst the Mallee trees where we lit a fire and rested for the night before setting off to Esperance.
To see a map of where we have traveled to date navigate to the following link were we have aggregated all the GPS waypoints sent by the Spot Gen 3 tracker.
We will camp out in Esperance on the coast for a few days, chill out and hopefully catch a few fish:)
